This book is inspiring, but not in the ooey gooey kind of inspiring. It’s inspiring in the real kick in the pants kind of inspiring. As you may or may not know, Sophia Amoruso is the founder and all-around boss lady of Nasty Gal. In her book, she writes about all the ups and downs of her journey to where she is now.
Like I said above, I found this book to be somewhat of a guide and something that I found inspired me to work harder for my goals. Yes, Sophia writes from the perspective of a businesswoman but I think the advice she imparts to her readers can be put to use in any situation in life. Each chapter’s title gives a little insight to that advice, and each of those titles is witty and sharp. They make you want to read on. I know I wanted to.
As I was reading through the book, I found myself feeling more connected to certain chapters over others. For instance, I really loved chapter six, which is entitled ‘Hocus-pocus: The Power of Magical Thinking.’ This chapter is all about doing the things and working at the things to accomplish our goals, instead of sitting back and hoping and praying we get to that goal. I took this as do instead of say. I tend to be the kind of person who hopes something will happen and won’t always work towards that certain something. I think we all are. From now on, I will remember ‘the power of magical thinking.’
Even though I found that I liked most of the book, my favorite parts were the mini profiles of other #GIRLBOSSES. At the end of almost every chapter, there was a little blurb from these women that I believe Sophia admires and looks up to. Each one of these blurbs entails this particular women’s journey and advice she gives to the readers. I liked the unique perspectives of each because each person/boss lady has their own journey to their success. Reading about each one of theirs was inspiring and made me want to work that much harder towards my own success.
I thought this book couldn’t get any better, until the end. There is one quote in the last chapter that just stuck with me. It is “You create the world, blink by blink. It is entirely yours to discover and yours to create.” How true is this?! You and I need to put in that effort to make the world we want. Doesn’t matter how hard and how long it takes.
I think this book needs to be on everyone’s reading list. Even if you don’t follow Sophia’s path, which you shouldn’t, use what she has said in her book as a guideline for your own journey and your own goals and you will have the success you are looking for.
Now, I don’t know how much of this was book review and how much of this was me just gushing about the book. Despite all that, I hope it inspires you to pick up this book and read it. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. And for those of you who have read it, let me know what you thought in the comments below. I love hearing from you!
Thanks for reading!
