Book Review~The Mortal Instruments City of Bones

09.05.16 | jesslynnwrites | No Comments

I want to preface this review by saying that while reading all I could picture was what I had seen on the show Shadowhunters, which is based on these books.

Before I get started with what I liked and didn’t like about the book, I thought I would tell you a little bit about the story. Hopefully, I don’t give away too much 🙂 This series is about a girl, Clary, who gets her whole world turned upside down when she finds out that she is part of a group of people called Shadowhunters. This first book in the series follows her journey to finding that out and actually accepting her new world. I hope that doesn’t give away too much 🙂

Even though I like each in different ways, the book was fun to read. I found that some of the characters weren’t what I was expecting. I found that I hated how they were portrayed, but that could be because I had watched the show first. I especially hated how Jace and Clary were portrayed. Jace was a total jerk and full of himself and Clary wasn’t as strong and independent as I expected her to be. Of course, toward the end of the book you get to see that side of her. I really liked the plot, though. I did see a lot of similarities between the book and the show. But I liked that it was more drawn out in the book, as it should be 🙂

I’ve always liked dystopian and weird books with creatures that don’t exist, so this book was right up my alley. Cassandra Clare is an amazing writer and has become one of my favorite authors just in this short period of reading this book. Her style keeps you hooked right through to the end. If you’re like me and are looking for your next series or your next Harry Potter, then I highly recommend picking this one up.

Let me know if you decide to read this. Also, let me know what books you’ve been reading and liking lately.

Jess
