September Reads: Cozy Starts & Chilling Ends

I’m calling September a pretty good reading month for me. I read some bangers and some that I just couldn’t get into. Here is everything I read in September.

Heat of the Everflame by Penn Cole-Audiobook

I can’t believe that was how this ended. I need the next book immediately! Much like everyone else, this was my favorite of the series so far (there is one more coming). Again, I really enjoyed the narrator Amanda Dolan (she narrated Glow of the Everflame too). She just has a way of immersing you in the story. This time though, there was an added narrator who read Luther’s part but it was for a very small section of the book. It kind of was a jump scare when his voice came through. I wasn’t expecting it. That being said, I wish it was duet narration. If you’re going to have a male and female narrator for a book, just make it that way.

Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez-Physical

I finally got to this one after months and months of adding it to my tbr. I really enjoyed this one, but I’m holding off by choosing my favorite of the three books in the series until I read Just for the Summer. Abby has a way of writing characters with real problems in real life scenarios and that is what I enjoy the most about her writing. There was no exception there with Yours Truly. The dynamic between Briana and Jacob was so great. I just really loved it. Also, JACOB! He was so sweet! And I really resonated with his anxiety/overthinking tendencies. It was a perfect representation of someone with anxiety (FYI, I don’t have diagnosed anxiety but I do know I suffer from it on some level).

When We Fell by Cristina Santos-Kindle

I had the pleasure of being sent and reading an ARC for this book and it was good. I liked the found family aspect (usually a trope I’m not a fan of). Check out my full review here.

The Housemaid by Frieda McFadden-Physical

This was my first foray into Frieda’s books and I wasn’t completely mad about that. The Housemaid is the book I hear you should start with when starting your journey and I would agree. It was an easy, ‘turn your brain off’ thriller read but much like almost every thriller/mystery book I’ve read before I guessed the ending.

I received this as an eARC this month and I’m not gonna lie, I just didn’t get on with it. It was a tough read on so many levels. Check out my full review.

Voyager by Diana Gabaldon-Kindle

Unfortunately, I’m going to have to return this on the Libby app before I even finish. I tried (and am trying) to get as much of it read as I possibly can before that point. So far, I’m enjoying it but I can’t help but compare it to the TV show. A lot of what is happening is playing out the same way as it does in Outlander.

The Hunger Games by Susanne Collins-Audiobook

At the end of the month, I really got the urge to start my reread of this and decided it would be fun to listen to it. The first time I read it, I read it on my Kindle and that was years and years ago. I’m basically going in blind again. It’s narrated by Tatianna Maslany (Orphan Black fame) and I’m enjoying her narration.

Desiring Your Love by Valery Archaga-Kindle

Another eARC sent to me that I have started. I don’t want to say too much here, so you will see my thoughts in a future ARC review post and my October Reads post. *Update: I have since DNFed this one, but you will see why in my October Reads post.

The Sound Between Us by Anna Bloom-Kindle

Yep! You guessed it! Another eARC that I just can’t seem to pick up again. I guess I will eventually. This is out now if you want to check it out. *Update: I have soft DNFed it for now. Again, will see why in my October Reads post.

By the end of the month, I found myself getting a little burned out on all the eARCs I had to read and as you can see I didn’t end up finishing a couple of them. Also, at the beginning of the month finishing Heat of the Everflame almost put me in a reading slump. I refused for this to happen, so I picked up a thriller and that helped. Sometimes, picking up another genre is really the solution.

I would love to know what your favorite book was of September. Hands down, mine was Heat of the Everflame. And I’m now impatiently waiting for the next (and last) one in the series.
