April was filled with some heavier, darker reads but I did throw a little, fluffy romance in there for good measure. And for the first time in a bit, I don’t have any DNFs. Here are my April reads.
Audiobooks:
Cher: The Memoir, Par 1 by Cher
I enjoyed this memoir, but I definitely think you need to be a fan of Cher and her music. This first part talks a lot about her childhood and her journey to becoming a successful performer. I found it really interesting that she and Sonny had to go to England in order to become popular in America. They were told that their uniqueness wouldn’t do well here in the states. I do just want to give you a heads up. If you decide to listen to this memoir and expecting Cher to read the whole thing, she does not. She tells us in the beginning that she has a friend of hers read parts because Cher has dyslexia. I’m interested in what part 2 will have in store.
Physical:
Count My Lies by Sophie Stava
I don’t read a lot of thrillers these days because I can usually suss out the twist before I even get to the end of the book. Count My Lies gave me whiplash because of all the twist and turns. I had theories and guesses on how I thought this story was going to end up, but in the end (Don’t worry! No spoilers!) I really didn’t see the twist coming. You get unreliable characters/narrators, suspense, & intrigue in this one. Bad vibes all around!
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
I don’t have a lot of opinions on this one. It’s a relatively good read, albeit very hefty in length. I was intimidated by not only the length, but also the story. This was a soft DNF for me last year and I guess April was the time I felt like picking it up again (mood reader problems). I decided this time to listen to it and that helped a lot. The narrator is perfect because he really immerses you in the story by reading in a southern accent. As for the story itself, it was pretty heartbreaking. Demon gets the short end of the stick is whole life, but somehow is resilient through it all. Not to say he gets out of anything that happens to him unscathed. Overall, I would recommend that everyone read this.

Done and Dusted by Lyla Sage
After Demon Copperhead (well, really during it), I really needed a lighthearted, fluffy anything. Done and Dusted came to the rescue (thank you Libby for sending through this library hold). This was my first ever cowboy romance and boy am I glad! I really enjoyed the dynamic between Emmy and Luke and their love story was really heartwarming. Also, Luke…the man that you are! It’s very Hallmark movie vibes, this book. There’s only one thing I don’t like about this book and that is the fact the author uses the “c” word a lot. I vehemently HATE that word and found it upsetting that I had to read it. Other than that, if you love romance, small towns, cowboys, etc. this is a great book.
Deeply Examined by Lexi Davis
I won’t say much about this book in this post because I have a standalone review of it, but I will say that this was my first foray into dark romance and I’m still not sure I’m a fan of the genre yet. This one gave me 50 Shades of Grey vibes, except it was a doctor and not a millionaire business owner (FYI, I’ve never read the books and don’t plan to. However, I have watched the 50 Shades movies). Let’s just say, this was an interesting read for me.
